Functie
3D printing (or additive manufacturing) is a manufacturing process which is gaining popularity within the aerospace sector thanks to the possibilities offered by this technology to manufacture highly optimized and efficient, lightweight structures.
One of the most promising metal additive manufacturing methods is Directed Energy Deposition (DED), in which a laser selectively heats and melts powder in a powder stream that is directed directly at the print. By adding material tracks layer by layer a metal part is built. DED has the possibility to print multiple materials fairly easily. This will also make it possible to manufacture optimised multi-material designs.
Description
The assignment is to investigate multi-material topology optimization. Investigate methods and software tools that can implement this and try these methods and software. For the assignment the foreseen activities are a literature study on multi-material topology optimization. An investigation of software tools and the possibilities of these software. Thereafter, a design approach will be developed including design aspects, structural aspects, material and practical use aspects and manufacturability (up to a point). This will result in a demonstrative design of a part where multi-material provides significant benefit over single material.
