In the world of wind tunnel testing, it is key to measure high quality data within the timeline and budget for the development of a product. Therefore NLR is designing and manufacturing world class wind tunnel models, filled with instrumentation. Some instrumentation can be expensive and lead times can be long, dominating the throughput time and costs of projects. NLR is constantly developing and evaluating new measurement techniques and instrumentation to be able to provide customers with the best tools they need. One of such techniques is the use of fibre optics for unsteady pressure measurements. Apart from costs and lead time, these sensors yield other benefits in terms of electromagnetic compatibility.
This internship covers a comparison study between the use of fibre optics for unsteady pressure measurements and conventional sensors. In this internship you will be responsible for:
•A literature survey to determine the working principles and current status of such techniques.
•Defining a plan and test set-up, in consultation with your supervisor, in order to compare the maturity of fibre optic unsteady pressure sensors against conventional sensors.
•Performing small scale experiments in the testing facilities of NLR.
•Presenting the results within the company and linked third parties.
So you will be involved in setting the first step for NLR towards implementation and integrating these state-of-the-art sensors.
