Internship assignment related to impact of aviation on quality of life during the Covid-19 crisis.
The relationship between environmental noise and quality of life is of fundamental importance for public health and the perception of nuisance. Noise exposure and annoyance can negatively affect people’s well-being and quality of life. In addition, environmental impact caused by aviation is considered more annoying than environmental impact from road or rail traffic. On the other hand, people benefit from air traffic, either by working abroad, visiting private or business relations, or having holidays far away. The NLR has developed indicators to describe the quality of life related to aviation. However, the impact of the current Covid-19 crisis on quality of life and the relative importance of people’s motives related to aviation are unclear. The aim within this project is to measure and assess the quality of life around airports during the Covid-19 crisis. For that purpose an online questionnaire will be developed. We hypothesise that the Covid-19 crisis will have sizeable effects on quality of life ratings. We expect that better understanding about the most important indicators and interactions of indicators for quality can be revealed during the Covid-19 crisis. Different aspects for quality of life such as health, safety, material conditions, leisure and social activities will be assessed. We will investigate for example how safety is rated compared to leisure activities, health compared to material wellbeing or employment. Information on people’s quality of life will provide an extra dimension of information that can be used for decision-making and sustainable development of airports.
We are looking for:
- Background in cognitive or clinical psychology
- Knowledge of statistics
- Initiative working attitude
- Analytical skills and thinking
- Ability to work both independently and in teams
- Commitment and reliability
The results from this research will provide better insight into which indicators determine people’s quality of life and the interactions between different indicators with respect to aviation. The impact of the Corona crisis on quality of life is assumed to reveal the most important indicators of quality of life in times of a crisis.
Duration and location of the assignment:
- 6 months. The duration can be mutually agreed otherwise according to education, candidate, and NLR interests. Parttime work is possible
- Start: As soon as possible
- Location is Amsterdam but as long as Corona measures are applied the work will be carried out remotely
- A challenging internship in a high-tech working environment
- Informal culture with room for own initiative, in which result orientation and involvement are important pillars

Royal NLR is an ambitious knowledge institute for the last 100 years and has NLR has the will to continue innovating. Based on this motivation, we try to make the world of transport safer, more sustainable, more efficient and more effective. We are on the threshold of pioneering innovations. More than 600 passionate professionals work on research and innovation at NLR, ranging from aircraft engineers to psychologists and from mathematicians to application experts. Our location in Amsterdam has recently been renovated and a beautiful new building has been realized in Marknesse.
The Environment and Policy Support department focuses on independent technical research and advice in the field of sustainable air traffic, noise exposure, noise annoyance and quality of life. For example, we conducted a systematic review to identity indicators for quality of life related to aviation. The knowledge built up internationally is directly applied to the daily operation of (inter) national airports and in policy issues for (inter) national governments.
