Functie
NLR’s ATM Real-Time Simulator (NARSIM) is a highly configurable simulation platform for Air Traffic Control (ATC). Using object-based, distributed technology and Commercial Off-The-Shelf hardware a unique simulation platform is available for Demonstration, Validation, Prototyping, and Training purposes.
The platform is scalable from notebook demonstration set-up to large-scale validation trials and can be coupled to third party systems. NARSIM is and has been used to evaluate and validate new Air Traffic Management technologies, such as
- Airport ground movement guidance control systems (A-SMGCS)
- Runway Incursion algorithms, Continuous Descent Approaches (CDAs)
- Arrival and Departure Management, Datalink applications
- Multiple Remote Tower Operations
NARSIM is also used as training simulator by both ACC, Approach and Tower Controllers. NARSIM is used on a daily basis by international teams of developers, Air Traffic Controllers and trainers. Besides NLR, users of NARSIM include DLR in Germany, LFV in Sweden and NTU in Singapore.
Voice Recognition and Response (VRR) is a technique that has shown a rapid development lately. Well known examples include Siri by Apple and Google’s Speech-to-Text. VRR has also made its way into the ATC Simulator segment where it is currently mainly applied in the training market to let students train without the need of a pseudo-pilot and to train ATC phraseology.
This graduation project will research the applicability of VRR in the existing NARSIM simulator. Therefore first of all a number of use cases for which VRR can be used in the NARSIM simulator will have to be identified in cooperation with our fellow international NARSIM users. Second, an analysis of existing VRR software solutions is made, including both open-source and licensed solutions. Depending on the obtained results, with this information an appropriate solution is chosen for the most promising use cases and is further enhanced and subsequently integrated in NARSIM.
Knowledge level and duration of the assignment
Approximately 9 months.
Profiel
MSc. Student; university level education in control theory, computer science or information science. Working knowledge and experience in the area of simulation technology and standards, test engineering, data-science and/or experimental design are an advantage. Demonstrated knowledge, skills and experience in software engineering and programming (C, C ++, C#, VisualBasic or Java) is a must have. Obviously, you should not lack a good amount of enthusiasm for aerospace domain, simulation, and state-of-the-art applications.
We are looking for an enthusiastic individual who is willing to help us develop the NARSIM product and its market. A set of technical requirement and market research is to be carried out. This will result in customers and functionalities segmentation. The information has to be validated by a customer targeting strategy.
Arbeidsvoorwaarden
- A challenging internship in a high-tech environment;
- Informal company culture with space for own initiative, with result-orientation and commitment as important factors;
- An attractive internship payment (€361 gross/month) and possibilities for development.
